Allana Buick & Bers (ABB) performed a corrosion study and assessment of the exterior power transformer and interior switchgear located at the Best Western, The Plaza Hotel located in Honolulu, Hawaii. This evaluation included repair recommendations and associated cost projections. The original hotel structure and associated electrical equipment installation were reportedly completed in 1977. The transformer had been replaced twice due to the excessive interior corrosion.

Testing to isolate and identify potential sources of the corrosion process was performed. Based on ABB´s review of the findings from their field observations and tests, the results concluded that the out gassing of the PVC wire insulation, within the sub-grade secondary conduits, were the probable source of the hydrochloric acid droplets that were corroding the interiors of the transformer and switchgear cabinets.

ABB prepared a detailed report documenting the forensic investigation, recommendations for remedial repairs, and preliminary engineering cost estimates.
