Allana Buick & Bers, Inc. (ABBAE) was retained by Stanford University to provide third party building enclosure consulting services for a new Nanotechnology Center located within the redeveloped main campus Engineering Quad.
The School of Engineering, Phase II Nanotechnology Center consists of three new classroom and laboratory buildings with connecting underground elements at the existing Engineering Quad. The buildings are three and four levels with an additional two levels below-grade.
ABBAE’s scope of services included below-grade, pedestrian deck waterproofing, building envelope detailing and sustainability, roof construction and integration, construction consultation and construction monitoring.
Nanotechnology is a group of emerging technologies in which the structure of matter is controlled at the nanometer scale, the scale of small numbers of atoms, to produce novel materials and devices that have useful and unique properties. Facilities designed for research and developing new nanotechnologies require an extremely high level of environmental control within the laboratory space. Minor failures of the building enclosure can ruin or delay valuable nanotechnology research. ABBAE’s proven expertise in building enclosure consulting and prior experience with similar critical use facilities were the deciding factor in being retained by Stanford University.
